Gratitude from A to Z: Relatives

Group of young cousins on the couch.I am grateful for relatives. The opportunity they provide to cultivate meaningful relationships. The connection and cohesiveness they provide to extended family.

I am grateful for the time spent with relatives. The comfort and joy found in the presence of people I have known all my life. I recently reconnected with two of my mother's cousins - my first cousins once removed. We walk, laugh, share family stories and discuss politics and social justice.

It takes time and effort to cultivate relationships with relatives but the rewards are many.

Always amazing to see who reaches out to reconnect. And to whom. Certainly there is enough extended family to keep one engaged for the next century. Comforting as well to have people who knew people no longer with us to keep their stories and the family's oral history alive. If it isn't captured within three generations, it's gone. So write things down when you hear them!

I have been recording some stories. One of a great grandfather who during the early stages of anarchy during the Russian revolution bravely took an overnight trip with a horse and cart to purchase needed supplies for his community. We can learn from relatives - good and bad.
